AI Dungeon review: text adventures, five tiers and a 13+ age limit

We read AI Dungeon's homepage, the help center's membership table, the AI Safety Settings and Community Guidelines, the Terms of Service (revised April 22, 2026) and the Privacy Policy (revised September 25, 2023), all from a US connection. We did not open an account: the terms let 13-year-olds sign up, and we only create test accounts on 18+ services.

The in-app pricing page did not load its plans for us, so prices come from the help center table. Nothing here describes our own play.

AI Dungeon, made by Latitude in Salt Lake City, is a text adventure. You pick a scenario, say a fantasy kingdom or a detective story, then type what your character does or says, and the AI writes the result. You can build your own worlds with story cards for characters and places, add scripts, or play shared worlds through Latitude's Voyage.

It is a game more than a companion app. There are no AI partner profiles to chat with; characters exist inside the story you are running.

Basic play is free. The four paid tiers run from $14.99 to $99.99 a month, and what rises with the price is how much of your story the AI keeps in mind (from about 8,000 to 32,000 tokens), how many memories it can store and how many Credits you get. Credits pay for pictures and for temporary extra context, and they do not expire.

You can pay monthly, every six months or yearly; longer terms are discounted, though the discount is only shown inside the app. Journey and Legend start with a one-week trial, but cancelling the trial ends the premium features straight away. Refunds are discretionary, mostly for people who forgot to cancel; App Store purchases go through Apple.

The free Wanderer tier keeps the core game: you can play with 25 memories and up to about 4,000 tokens of context, which is enough for short sessions. It comes with no Credits, so pictures cost money from the start.

Adult content is opt-in. The account-wide safety setting has three levels, and only Mature lets the AI write sexual or graphic material; switching it on asks you to confirm you are 18+. Unpublished stories are not moderated by people, but an automatic filter blocks sexual content involving minors in all play.

Anything you publish follows detailed Community Guidelines with E, T, M and Unrated ratings. Published content may not include minors in sexual content, including high-school settings with an "everyone is 18" disclaimer, incest (step-family counts), non-consent or sexualized content about real people. The public catalog only shows Everyone and Teen content to visitors.

The help center says staff do not read unpublished content, and stories are encrypted, with the key kept on Latitude's servers. Model outputs are scored by an outside safety vendor, Hive, which the help center says does not keep the data. If you switch on "Improve the AI", your inputs and outputs may be published in a dataset.

Latitude has disclosed past incidents, including a 2021 leak of story snippets by a vendor's contractor and unauthorized access to storage in 2022. There is no public step-by-step guide to deleting an account; the terms only say deleted accounts cannot be recovered.

Pick it if you like steering a story, want a free way to start, and value clear rules on what can be published.

Skip it if you want an adult-only service, a companion who chats like a partner, voice or video, or a language other than English. The terms admit users from 13, and the App Store rates the app 12+.
