FictionLab review: deep story tools, a 16+ audience and no filter

FictionLab is a scenario-roleplay site with a generous free tier and serious world-building tools, and it now shows its prices: $8.99 a month for FictionLab+ and $24.99 for ULTRA.

OUR TAKE

The short version

FictionLab is a scenario-roleplay site with a generous free tier and serious world-building tools, and it now shows its prices: $8.99 a month for FictionLab+ and $24.99 for ULTRA. It is also open to 16-year-olds and says it has no NSFW filter of any kind. That pairing is why we do not recommend it for adult chat, however good the lore engine is.

The site showed a Cloudflare check that cleared on its own. We did not sign up, because the minimum age is 16. We did not chat or pay.

What we checked on 23 October 2026

We opened FictionLab from a US connection without an account. The site first showed a Cloudflare security check that cleared on its own after a short wait; we did not click or solve anything. We read the home page, both upgrade windows, the FAQ, the terms, the privacy policy and the official tier table on FictionLab's documentation site.

We did not create a free account. Our rules allow test sign-ups only where the terms require users to be 18, and FictionLab's minimum age is 16. So chat quality, memory and limits are described from FictionLab's own documents, not measured.

What FictionLab is

FictionLab builds roleplay around scenarios rather than single characters. A scenario sets the world, the cast and the starting situation, and the AI runs a story with several characters at once. You can start one of the community's scenarios or write your own in the creation panel, with backstory, lore entries, custom instructions and a memory bank the AI draws on.

The library is huge and tagged in detail, from Fantasy and Mystery to School, Celebrities and Age Gap. FictionLab runs in the browser; its FAQ says there is an Android app and an iOS version in development, but we could not find the Android listing in a US Google Play search that day.

What it costs

The free tier is unusually complete: three models with 32K context, 100 memories, 10 user characters and 20 image credits, and scenario creation costs nothing. FictionLab+ is $8.99 a month and moves you to larger models, 131K context, 500 memories and unlimited characters. ULTRA, at $24.99 a month, adds thinking models, 1,000 memories, interactive lore maps, in-chat images and 400 daily image credits.

Only monthly billing was shown. FictionLab+ used to cost $7.99, according to an older update post, and the terms let FictionLab change prices at any renewal. Fees are non-refundable unless the law says otherwise, and deleting your account ends a paid plan with no refund.

Age, filters and content rules

This is where FictionLab parts ways with an adult-only service. The terms say you must be at least 16, and the FAQ confirms it. The same FAQ says FictionLab "doesn't have any NSFW or other types of filters", only the terms. Teenagers and unfiltered roleplay on one platform is a combination we do not recommend for adult content.

The terms do ban content that sexually exploits or abuses a minor, including grooming, and forbid soliciting personal information from anyone under 18. Using a real person's name or likeness without permission is banned outside parody or commentary, although the catalog has a Celebrities tag.

Privacy and deleting your account

Other users and scenario creators cannot read your chats, according to the FAQ; reporting a message sends part of the conversation to the developers. The privacy policy allows FictionLab to use collected information to train its AI models and lists analytics tools such as Google Analytics.

You delete your account under Settings, Manage Account, Delete Account, and it cannot be restored. If a public scenario you wrote became popular, FictionLab may keep it online even after you delete your account.

Who might look at FictionLab, and who should skip it

If you write long, lore-heavy stories and want a strong free tier to try them, FictionLab's tools are among the deepest in this space, and its tier table is unusually open.

Skip it if you are looking for an adult-only companion. A 16+ audience with no content filter is not a setting we can recommend for mature roleplay. The services below require users to be 18.
