Is Muah AI safe? What the 2024 data breach exposed

Editorial draft. This page demonstrates the template. Selection, recommendations and copy await review.

The facts of the 2024 Muah.AI data breach from Have I Been Pwned and security reporting, what affected users should do, and why we do not recommend it.

Sources checked: .

The short answer

We do not recommend Muah AI. In September 2024 the service suffered a data breach that exposed 1.9 million email addresses together with the prompts users had written, according to Have I Been Pwned (HIBP), the breach notification service. Many of those addresses could be tied to real people, and reports followed of extortion attempts using the data.

We have not reviewed the product, we do not link to it, and this page is not a review. It sets out what is documented about the breach, what affected users can do now, and what to look for in any companion service. Checked October 23, 2026.

What happened

The documented timeline:

  • September 17, 2024: the breach date recorded by HIBP.
  • Early October 2024: the tech news site 404 Media first reported the breach. A hacker described the site to reporters as "a handful of open-source projects duct-taped together", according to Malwarebytes, which summarized the reporting on October 9, 2024.
  • October 8, 2024: HIBP added the breach: 1,910,261 affected email addresses.
  • October 11, 2024 onward: Malwarebytes updated its report to note extortion attempts using the leaked information.
  • October 14, 2024: the law firm Linklaters wrote that there were reports of criminals contacting IT employees named in the data and asking for access to their employers' systems.

HIBP lists the compromised data as email addresses, AI prompts and sexual preferences. Its summary notes that many prompts were sexual in nature and that some described illegal content. That is one reason it classifies the incident as a sensitive breach.

What the operator said

According to the reporting summarized by Malwarebytes, the site's administrator claimed the attack was "sponsored by competitors". We found no independent confirmation of that claim and no public post-incident security report from the operator. The Muah.AI website did not respond normally to our checks, so we could not review its current terms, privacy policy or security statements.

Without those documents, we cannot say what has changed since 2024. That is the core of our answer to "is Muah AI legit": a service may operate legally and still fail to protect what users tell it.

Why this breach mattered more than most

Three details made the damage worse than a typical password leak:

  1. Prompts were linked to email addresses. Many addresses could be tied to real identities, and the extortion reports Linklaters described targeted people through their jobs.
  2. The content was intimate. Leaked prompts reveal private preferences, which is exactly what extortionists look for.
  3. A breach cannot be undone. Once data is copied, deleting your account does not recall it.

The same risk applies to any service that stores chat logs linked to an identity. Our AI companion data breaches guide lists other incidents in this category.

If you used Muah AI: what to do now

  1. Check whether your email was included. Because the breach is flagged as sensitive, HIBP does not show it in a normal public search. Use HIBP's Notify Me service, which sends a verification link to your address and then shows sensitive breaches to you only.
  2. Change reused passwords. If you used the same password anywhere else, change it there, starting with your email account. Turn on two-factor authentication for email.
  3. Treat contact about the breach as hostile. Do not reply to messages that quote your data, do not pay, and do not click links in them. Keep copies of the messages as evidence.
  4. Report extortion. In the United States, report it to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov. Elsewhere, contact local police.
  5. Tell your employer's security team if anyone asks you for access to work systems. That is the pattern Linklaters described, and security teams deal with it without judging the reason.
  6. Separate identities going forward. For any companion service, use an email address with no real name in it, used for nothing else.

How to delete a Muah AI account

We could not verify official deletion steps, because the Muah.AI website did not respond normally when we checked it. If you still have access, look for a deletion option in account settings and, if there is none, contact the operator's support in writing and ask for confirmation that your account and chat history were deleted. Keep the reply.

Be realistic about what this achieves: deletion stops future storage, but it does not remove data that was already copied in 2024. Cancel any active payment first; the steps for card, App Store and Google Play billing are in the billing guide.

How to judge any companion service before signing up

Muah is an extreme case, but the questions are the same everywhere:

  • Does the privacy policy name the company and country behind the service?
  • Does it say how long chats are kept, and whether they train models?
  • Is there a self-service deletion path?
  • Does the operator publish anything about security, such as encryption, audits or a contact for vulnerability reports?
  • Has the service had a breach? Search its name with "breach" before paying.

The AI companion privacy guide walks through these checks with examples from official policies, and the companions category shows how listed services describe their own rules.

Frequently asked questions

Is Muah AI safe?

We do not recommend it. A 2024 breach exposed 1.9 million email addresses with users' prompts, according to Have I Been Pwned, and extortion attempts followed. We found no public post-incident security report from the operator.

Is Muah AI legit?

It is a real service, but legitimacy is not the same as safety. Its 2024 breach linked intimate prompts to email addresses, which is the main risk we weigh.

How do I know if my data was in the Muah AI breach?

Have I Been Pwned classifies it as a sensitive breach, so it is not shown in public searches. Use the Notify Me service to verify your email address and see the result privately.

What should I do if someone threatens to expose my Muah AI data?

Do not pay or reply. Keep the messages, report the attempt to ic3.gov in the US or to local police, and alert your employer's security team if you are asked for access to work systems.

How do I delete my Muah AI account?

We could not verify official steps because the site did not respond normally to our checks. Use any deletion option in settings or ask support in writing, and cancel payments first. Deletion does not recall data copied in 2024.
