Why AI companion charges confuse people
Most AI companion services combine two payment models, bill through different channels, and some deliberately show a neutral name on your card statement. That is how an unfamiliar line, such as a Swipey AI charge on a credit card that does not say "Swipey", ends up looking like fraud.
This guide explains the mechanics using what providers publish in their terms and FAQs, and what Apple and Google publish about cancellation and refunds. It is general information, not legal or financial advice. We have not made purchases to test any of it.
Subscriptions, tokens and the difference
Subscriptions renew automatically until you cancel. The PolyBuzz terms are typical: a plan "will be automatically renewed unless it is cancelled on or before the last day of the subscription period".
Tokens, coins or credits are a virtual currency for extra features such as image generation, voice time or regenerated replies. Their rules are usually stricter than the subscription's:
- The Candy AI terms say tokens cannot be transferred, exchanged for money or used to settle payments, and that tokens included with a subscription expire when the billing period ends after you cancel.
- PolyBuzz describes its coins as currency for voice time, regenerated responses and similar extras.
Many services sell both, so a monthly plan and a separate token pack can appear as two charges. Before paying, check which features need tokens on top of the plan. Brand-by-brand prices are on each review page, for example Candy AI and Swipey.
Discreet billing: what brands officially say
Some providers state that card charges do not show the product name. We only repeat what the brand itself publishes:
- Candy AI (FAQ on candy.ai): transactions "appear under a neutral merchant name" and there is "no direct reference to Candy AI or its services" on the bank statement. The terms name the operator as EverAI Limited, registered in Malta, which helps you match a charge to the service.
- Swipey (FAQ on swipey.ai): billing is described as discreet, with a neutral merchant name on the bank statement, and cancellation "anytime in account settings".
Neither brand publishes the exact descriptor text, so we do not print one. If you see a charge you cannot place, search your email for a receipt from the same date and amount, then contact the provider's support with the transaction details.
Keep in mind what a neutral descriptor does not hide: email receipts, the account's payment history, and purchase history in Apple or Google accounts. In-app purchases are billed by Apple or Google, so they appear in your Apple or Google purchase history under the app's name.
How to cancel on the web
If you paid on the provider's website, cancel there. Look for subscription settings in your profile:
- Candy AI's terms point to Settings / Unsubscribe in your account and say the plan stays active until the end of the current billing period.
- Swipey's FAQ says you can cancel in account settings.
Take a screenshot of the confirmation screen or keep the confirmation email. Deleting your account is a separate step: some services, PolyBuzz among them, will not delete an account while a paid plan is active (see Is PolyBuzz safe?).
How to cancel in the App Store (iPhone and iPad)
From Apple Support:
- Open Settings and tap your name.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Tap the subscription.
- Tap Cancel Subscription (you may need to scroll down).
Apple notes that if there is no Cancel button, or you see an expiration message in red text, the subscription is already cancelled. The same page covers cancelling on the web, on a Mac and on other devices.
How to cancel in Google Play
From Google Play Help:
- On your Android device, go to subscriptions in Google Play.
- Select the subscription you want to cancel.
- Tap Cancel subscription and follow the instructions.
Google states that uninstalling an app does not cancel its subscription, and that after cancelling you keep access for the time you have already paid for. Make sure you are signed in to the Google account that holds the subscription.
Refunds
Refunds depend on where you paid.
Apple. Per Apple Support, sign in to reportaproblem.apple.com, choose "I'd like to", then "Request a refund", pick a reason and the item. Apple says to expect an update within 24 to 48 hours; approval is not guaranteed.
Google Play. Google's refund policies say most apps are made by third-party developers, and contacting the developer "is often the quickest way". Unauthorized charges should be reported within 120 days. Rules differ by country.
Direct purchases. The provider's own terms apply, and they are often short:
- Candy AI: refund requests within 24 hours of payment, denied if more than 20 tokens were used, card purchases only. EU and UK residents have a separate 14-day withdrawal right, reduced pro rata for services already used.
- PolyBuzz: users "are not entitled to any refund for a completed purchase without due reason".
Read the refund clause before buying a long plan, not after.
Chargebacks: the last resort
A chargeback is a dispute you open with your card issuer instead of the merchant. For US credit cards, the FTC explains that the Fair Credit Billing Act lets you dispute billing errors in writing; your letter should reach the issuer within 60 days after the first bill with the error was sent (FTC consumer guide). Debit cards and other payment methods follow different rules, so ask your bank.
Two practical points. Contact the provider first and keep the reply; issuers usually ask what you tried. And expect consequences on the service side: the Candy AI terms say a chargeback immediately cancels the purchase and revokes premium access and remaining tokens. This is general information, not legal advice.
Checklist before you pay
- Note where you are paying: website, App Store or Google Play. That decides how you cancel and who handles refunds.
- Check whether image, voice or extra messages need tokens on top of the plan.
- Read the renewal period and the refund window (sometimes 24 hours).
- Set a calendar reminder a few days before renewal.
- Keep the receipt email; with a neutral descriptor it is the easiest way to identify the charge later.
What happens to your data after you stop paying is covered in the AI companion privacy guide.

Frequently asked questions
Why does a Swipey AI charge on my credit card show a different name?
Swipey's FAQ says billing is discreet and the bank statement shows a neutral merchant name. It does not publish the exact text, so match the date and amount with your receipt email or contact Swipey support.
How will Candy AI appear on my bank statement?
Candy AI's FAQ says charges appear under a neutral merchant name with no direct reference to Candy AI. Its terms name the operator as EverAI Limited (Malta).
Does deleting the app cancel an AI companion subscription?
No. Cancel in the App Store, Google Play or the provider's website, depending on where you paid. Google states that uninstalling does not cancel a subscription.
Can I get a refund on an AI girlfriend subscription?
It depends on the channel. Apple and Google run their own refund requests; direct purchases follow the provider's terms, which can be strict (Candy AI: within 24 hours, limited token use).
Should I file a chargeback?
Contact the provider first. A chargeback is a dispute with your card issuer; providers such as Candy AI cancel the purchase and revoke access when one is filed. This is general information, not legal advice.
