What Agnai is
Agnai, also called Agnaistic, is an open-source chat front end for role-play with fictional characters. It sits in the same family as SillyTavern: you load a character card, choose a model and tune presets for context length, sampling and prompt format. The difference is that Agnai runs as a website at agnai.chat, so you do not have to install anything, and it also hosts its own models.
The code is on GitHub under the AGPL-3.0 license, with 788 stars on the day we checked and the last commits about four months old.
What it costs
Agnai itself is free and shows banner ads. The hosted Agnaistic service gives everyone Mistral Nemo 2407 at 8K context, and you can also plug in your own API keys or a local backend at no cost from Agnai.
Paid support goes through Patreon: Tier 1 at $5 a month removes ads and extends context; Tier 2 Artificer at $10 adds better models, image generation and API access; Tier 4 Aesthete at $20, the creator's recommended tier, unlocks the top models. Tiers at $35 and $50 are for supporters. Patreon bills monthly until you cancel, and Agnai's terms say nothing about refunds.
What we saw without an account
In guest mode the app opens straight away. A welcome tip says you can chat completely for free with no limits or restrictions, and the sidebar leads to Characters, Chats, Library and Presets. The character editor has tabs for persona, voice, images and advanced settings, and it imports and exports character cards. There is no catalog of ready-made characters to browse, so you start from your own or from cards you bring from elsewhere.
Content rules and age
The FAQ says Agnaistic does not make any attempt to filter your responses, so what you get depends on the model you choose and its provider's rules. The terms, dated September 27, 2023, require users to be at least 18 and say under-18 accounts will be restricted or revoked. The use restrictions forbid exploiting or harming minors in any way and generating illegal content. There is no age check beyond the terms.
Privacy
Guest data stays in your browser, and you can export a backup from your profile. With an account, the privacy policy covers account details, chat content, logs and analytics cookies, and the terms reserve the right to use content to improve the service. The policy says Agnaistic does not sell or share personal information as defined by California law and lists rights to access and delete data. If you use your own API key, your messages also go to that provider under its terms.
Who should pick Agnai
Agnai suits people who already know character cards and presets and want a free, browser-based front end with a hosted model included. If you want a ready-made catalog of characters and a simpler start, Janitor AI or CrushOn are closer to that. If you want full control on your own machine, SillyTavern is the usual pick.
