Pygmalion AI review: open-source role-play models, plans from $6.50 and the content rules

PygmalionAI started in late 2022 as an open-source effort to build role-play models inspired by Character.AI; many people know it from the Pygmalion-6B model. The team incorporated in 2023, built the Aphrodite inference engine and finished its own chat site, pygmalion.chat, in January 2025.

The site counts 101,200+ users, 3,950+ character cards and 1,130+ creators. You browse community cards in Explore, chat with them on Pygmalion's hosted models, and make your own cards with lorebooks and backgrounds.

Free chat is unlimited on the free models, with memory cut to 8K, no premium models, possible ads and slower replies at busy times. Low-Cost is $6.50 a month and adds the Grimoire memory system, 16K context, faster generation and 150 messages on a premium model. Premium is $17.99 a month for unlimited access to all models and the fastest generation.

The FAQ draws a line between NSFW and uncensored: the platform does not endorse NSFW content, but it wants model replies without heavy censorship. The guidelines ban cards built around explicit sexual scenarios and any nudity in images or text, along with CSAM.

Mature themes go into Sensitive Cards, which users 18 and over must opt into in their settings. Private cards are not monitored proactively, but prohibited use found on or off the site can lead to account removal. Characters based on private people or living persons need their consent; public figures are excluded from that rule.

The terms and the guidelines allow users from 16. Users who are minors where they live, usually under 18, need a parent or guardian's permission and supervision, and users aged 16 and 17 see different content. The guidelines also say characters with a stated age must be 16 or older. There is no separate age check on sign-up described on the public pages.

The privacy policy (last updated January 23, 2024) covers account and usage data and cookies, and lets you update or delete information from your account settings or by contacting the team. The home page promises private chats and that you can back up or delete your data whenever you wish; a recent update mentions a revamped account deletion flow.

Pygmalion AI fits role-players who like open models, community cards and a low monthly price, and who are fine with rules against explicit content. If adult role-play is what you want, 18+ services such as Janitor AI, CrushOn or JuicyChat allow it.
