SoulGen review: cheap credits, loose rules on faces and age

We opened SoulGen's public US pages without an account: the homepage, pricing, the AI Character builder, the Soul Chat catalog and the legal pages. We did not create a free account. Our rules allow test sign-ups only where the terms require users to be 18 and explicitly ban sexual content involving minors, and SoulGen's terms do neither.

So nothing here comes from a signed-in session: no chat, no generated images, no free-limit count. Prices and credit costs are as the pricing page showed them that day.

SoulGen is run by Synapse AI Limited in Hong Kong. It started as an AI picture generator and now leads with video: the homepage pitches talking characters with lip-sync. Around that sit a character image builder with realistic, "DreamTwin" and anime modes, editing tools for any picture you upload, and Soul Chat, a companion chat with ready-made characters.

There is no age screen on the public pages and no app in the App Store or Google Play. Everything runs in the browser.

Pro was $12.99 for one month, marked "No recurring fees", or $90.99 for a year under a "42% off" first-purchase promo. Both include 100 credits a month and remove the blur on results.

The credit table is the most open part of SoulGen. A character image costs 1 credit, or 2 with a face reference. Video costs 10 to 40 credits per five seconds depending on the model. A chat message is 0.2 credits and a voice call 1 credit a minute. Credit packs exist, but their prices only appear after sign-in.

Refunds are tight. The return policy pays back a subscription within 14 days only if you have not used a single credit or made a single image, and it excludes sale items. The terms warn that asking for a refund after creating an image starts a dispute and can get you "blocked definitively".

This is the main reason SoulGen is not on our lists. A homepage section titled "Create Portrait of Someone Lookalike" tells you to upload a reference photo so the AI draws a character "with the face of someone lookalike". In the builder this is the "Looks like" option, a Pro feature. The editing tools also accept any image you upload.

The terms only say you should not upload a third party's personal information without consent or content that invades privacy or publicity rights. There is no deepfake clause and no outright ban on using another person's face.

The terms do not set 18 as the minimum. They say users under the legal age in their country can use SoulGen "under the supervision of your parent(s) or legal guardian". The privacy policy says the opposite: the app "is not intended for children under 18 years". We found no clause that explicitly bans sexual content depicting minors.

The public Soul Chat catalog adds to the concern. Next to office and lifestyle characters, it lists a "new stepmother", an "elder stepsister", a "Big Sister" who looks after her brother, university classmates and a college cheerleader.

SoulGen keeps creations you do not post to its community for 7 days and then deletes them automatically. The terms say your generated content is not used for advertising or model training. Data is stored in Hong Kong and, in the privacy policy's words, may be subject to lawful requests by local courts or law enforcement.

The privacy policy describes a "Delete Account" button that erases your creations, purchase records and collections and cannot be undone. To stop a renewal, the terms point you to your PayPal account or a feedback form.

If all you want is a price list per image or per second of video, SoulGen publishes one, which many rivals do not.

Skip it if you care about how a generator handles real faces and age. A service that advertises lookalike uploads, lets minors in with a guardian and fills its chat catalog with step-family roles is not one we can point adults to. If you want character pictures and chat, pick a service that blocks photo uploads entirely.
