Character.AI review: free chat, the content filter, age checks and c.ai+ prices

Character.AI, run by Character Technologies, Inc. in Menlo Park, is a chat platform where users create AI characters and share them with everyone else. The sign-up page promises access to more than 10 million characters: fictional heroes, tutors, game masters, companions and fan creations. You sign up with Google, Apple or email and chat on the web or in the iOS and Android apps.

The service is built for storytelling and role-play in general, not for adult content. That shapes everything below.

The free plan keeps unlimited messaging, with ads and a slow mode at busy times. (c.ai) lite costs $4.99 a month or $2.49 a week in the US and adds a daily allowance on the premium chat styles, fewer ads and 30 memory pins instead of 15.

c.ai+ is $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year. It removes ads, unlocks the DeepSqueak and LongSqueak styles without a daily cap, adds the advanced Lorebook and gives 20% bonus Charms on currency packs. Every plan renews automatically, and the terms say payments are non-refundable except where the law requires it; App Store and Google Play buyers ask Apple or Google.

The community guidelines prohibit pornographic content and nudity, and the models run filters meant to prevent such outputs. Romance and dramatic storylines are allowed, but sexual scenes are blocked or redirected, and paying for c.ai+ does not change this. The terms let anyone from 13 sign up (16 in the EEA and UK). Since late 2025, open-ended chat is reserved for adults: Character.AI runs age assurance on every account using login data, activity and third-party signals.

If you are judged 18+, chat works as before. If you are flagged as under 18, the account moves to the Under-18 experience with reading mode: you can browse characters, reread past chats and create characters, scenes and videos, but you cannot chat. An adult flagged by mistake can verify with a Persona selfie in Settings, Advanced, Verify Age; Persona asks for an ID only if the selfie is inconclusive and deletes biometric data within seven days. A c.ai+ subscription does not skip this check. The US App Store rates the app 18+.

The privacy policy (effective July 1, 2026) says Character.AI uses service data to improve the product, including to train its AI models, and it offers US state privacy rights such as opting out of targeted advertising. Characters you made public may stay on the platform after you delete your account, so the policy suggests keeping personal details out of shared characters. You can delete the account yourself from Profile Settings; deletion is permanent. The terms also ban deepfakes and the use of a real person's name or likeness without permission.

Most people who leave Character.AI want one of three things: adult or unfiltered role-play, chat without age checks or a selfie, or fewer ads and waits without paying. The services that allow adult content are 18+ only and usually charge more for long sessions and images.
