4 adult text adventure platforms compared on lorebooks, narrator bots, dice-style scripts and group scenes, with USD prices checked 23 Oct 2026.

How we chose and detailed notes ↓

Janitor AI

Character chat platform with millions of user-made bots, a free built-in model and optional connections to third-party AI models.

Free access: Unlimited chats with community bots on standard models, about 9k tokens of context

Trade-off: The privacy policy sets no fixed retention period and does not say plainly whether chats are used to train models.

At a glance

If you want game mechanics and not only chat, Janitor AI is the strongest free start: its Scripts system adds lorebooks, probability rolls on every message and community templates such as Random Encounter, on a free tier with about 9k tokens of context. Chub AI is the better pick if you want mini-game add-ons and a deep community lorebook library, with Mars at $20 a month. Every service below is for adults only, and all prices were read on official pages on 23 October 2026.

This page is about the game side of roleplay: dice, stats, narrator bots, lorebooks and scenario cards. For general character chat, see our roleplay category.

How we chose

A text adventure needs more than a chatty character. We looked for five things, and a service had to show at least two of them in its own documentation:

  1. World memory. A lorebook or similar tool that loads facts about places, factions and items only when they come up.
  2. A narrator or game master. A way to run the story from above, either a narrator character or an out-of-character channel.
  3. Chance and state. Anything that works like dice or tracks a value between turns.
  4. Scenario cards. A premise you can start from, so you are not writing the opening every time.
  5. Several characters in one scene. Parties, rivals and side characters in one chat.

What we checked: public help centers, docs, pricing pages and content rules, read through a US connection on 23 October 2026. We did not play long sessions for this page, so nothing below is a claim about reply quality. Where a feature was not in the official docs, we say "not confirmed". Our full process is on the methodology page.

SpicyChat, HammerAI and Xoul AI are not included while we re-check their catalogs and policies (Oct 2026).

One honest note before the list: none of the recommended services publishes a built-in d20 roller in the docs we read. The closest things are Janitor's probability scripts and Chub's Stages. Everywhere else, you can ask the narrator to roll and report the result, but that is the model improvising, not a real random number.

The picks, one by one

Janitor AI: the rule-builder's choice

Janitor's Scripts are the nearest thing to a game engine on this list. A Lorebook script works like an encyclopedia that opens itself: you write entries with trigger words, and the matching entry is slipped into the bot's context for that message. Both you and the bot can trigger entries, and setting the scan depth to 1 limits triggers to your own last message.

The RPG part is the probability setting. Each entry can have a chance to fire, rerolled every message, so a 50% entry is literally a coin flip. Weighted groups pick one entry out of several by "tickets". That is enough to build random encounters, loot tables or weather. The help center also lists community templates such as Random Encounter, Emotion Engine and Scene Orchestrator Engine, and Advanced scripts can follow rules like "if they've been chatting for a while".

If you already use SillyTavern, the help center says you can paste existing lorebook entries straight into a Lorebook script.

  • Price: standard-model chat is free. janitor+ costs $12.99/month or $99/year; renews automatically, tax not included. Checked October 24, 2026 on the official janitor+ page.
  • Rules: 18+ only; characters with sexual or romantic themes must be tagged Limitless, and minor-coded characters are banned outright.
  • The minus: scripts take setup. Expect to read the beginner guide before your first dungeon works the way you want.

Chub AI: mini-games and a deep lorebook library

Chub is a community hub for character cards, lorebooks, presets and Stages. Stages are add-ons written by other people that run inside a chat: the docs mention expression packs, special prompt handling and UIs for mini-games, with a maze game as the example. Stages run in a sandboxed frame, and a "Verified" mark means the developers checked one for hostile behavior.

Chub's lorebook settings are the most explicit on this list: scan depth (how many recent messages are checked for keywords) and a token budget (how much space lore may take). You can add more characters in chat settings and run chats on Chub's own models or on a connection you bring, including NovelAI, OpenRouter or a local backend.

  • Price: Mars is $20 a month with unlimited messaging, per the docs. Other tiers load after sign-in and were not published.
  • Rules: 18+; adult content sits behind account toggles; any card, lorebook or stage sexualizing someone who is or looks under 18 is banned.
  • The minus: Chub does not explicitly ban deepfakes or uploading other people's photos, and Stages are third-party code, so never paste your API keys into one.

Secrets AI: genre scenarios you can rewind

Secrets AI opens with Scenarios: you pick a genre such as Mystery, Romance or Adventure, watch a short opening and choose your first reply. Time Travel lets you rewind to any earlier message, which is handy when a fight goes wrong, though it deletes everything after that point. OOC Commands let you talk to the AI behind the character without breaking the story, which is your game-master channel.

Lorebooks are on Premium and Ultimate. Group chats are Ultimate only and hold up to 3 companions.

  • Price: free with 20 messages a day; Premium $19.99 a month ($109.99 a year); Ultimate $39.99 a month ($319.99 a year). Sale prices apply to the first billing period only.
  • Rules: 18+; bans content involving minors and intimate content depicting identifiable real people.
  • The minus: small parties only. Three companions is fine for a duel, thin for a full adventuring group.

Nectar AI: premise, role and cast

Nectar's version of a scenario card is called a Fantasy. The description sets the starting situation and can cast you in a role before you press Start Chat. A Fantasy with several companions becomes a group chat, and Discover has a "Groups Only" filter. Nectar's FAQ also leans on memory: companions keep storylines across sessions, with extended memory on paid plans.

  • Price: Premium $19.99 a month list ($9.99 discounted), Pro $29.99 ($19.99), Ultimate $49.99 ($34.99). Which price you see at checkout was not verified.
  • Rules: NSFW mode is for verified users 18 and over; minors and non-consensual scenarios are banned.
  • The minus: the terms, FAQ and privacy policy disagree on minimum age, and lorebooks or dice tools are not confirmed.

Also worth knowing (not ranked)

These come up in every search for AI text adventures. They are here for context, without a recommendation.

  • AI Dungeon describes itself as a free AI text adventure game. Its guidebook covers Do, Say, Story and See modes, Story Cards, scripting and AI Safety Settings. Details on our AI Dungeon page.
  • Perchance is a platform of user-made generators, and its AI RPG page draws a lot of search traffic. See our Perchance page.
  • SillyTavern is a self-hosted chat client with lorebooks (World Info) that many players pair with their own model. See our SillyTavern page.

Red flags for adult RPG platforms

Skip a service if any of these apply:

  • No clear ban on minors in characters, lorebooks and scenarios. Every pick above has one in writing.
  • Real-person or photo upload features with no consent rule. A fantasy campaign never needs a real face.
  • Refund terms you have not read. Chub says refunds are rare, and Secrets AI sale prices apply to the first billing period only. Try the free tier first.
  • Bring-your-own-model setups you do not understand. Proxies and API keys move your chats to another company. Our privacy guide covers what to check.

How to set up your first text adventure

  1. Pick a premise card or write a two-line scenario: who you are, where you start, what you want.
  2. Add a lorebook with five to ten entries: the town, the main faction, one villain, one item, the rules of magic.
  3. Decide how chance works. On Janitor, a probability script. Elsewhere, ask the narrator to roll and state the number.
  4. Keep a short stat line in your persona (health, gold, one skill) and ask the narrator to update it at the end of each scene.
  5. Use the out-of-character channel (OOC commands, or a narrator character) when the story drifts, instead of arguing in character.

FAQ

Is there an NSFW AI Dungeon? AI Dungeon itself has AI Safety Settings and a published content policy, so check those on its own help pages. If you want adult text adventures by design, the 18+ platforms above allow mature themes under their rules, with hard bans on minors.

Which fantasy roleplay AI has real dice rolls? None of the recommended services lists a built-in dice roller in its docs. Janitor AI's probability scripts reroll every message and are the closest match; Chub AI's Stages can add mini-game interfaces. On other services, a narrator "roll" is generated text.

What is a lorebook, and do I need one? A lorebook is a set of entries with trigger words. When a keyword appears in recent messages, the entry is added to the AI's context, so it remembers your world without stuffing everything into the character. For a campaign longer than one evening, yes, you need one.

Can I play an RPG for free? Yes, with limits. Janitor AI gives unlimited chats with about 9k tokens of context. Secrets AI's free tier is 20 messages a day.

Can I run a group adventure with several characters? Yes. A Nectar AI Fantasy with several companions becomes a group chat, Chub lets you add characters in chat settings, and Secrets AI holds up to 3 on its Ultimate plan.
