Best free AI girlfriend apps: what each one really gives for $0

Almost every AI girlfriend app says it is free. In the official terms and help pages, "free" turns out to mean very different things: 20 messages a day, 5 messages in total, a few characters, or a coin for every message you send. This page lists only what each service's own documents say the free tier includes.

If you already plan to pay, the AI girlfriend apps comparison focuses on paid plans, renewals and refunds instead.

• Secrets AI. Best for: A clearly documented daily free allowance. The official wiki lists the Free tier at 20 messages per day, with no Moments and no image or video generation. If you upgrade, Premium is $19.99/month and sale discounts apply to the first billing period only. The privacy policy says chat history is deleted immediately when you delete the account.
• Janitor AI. Best for: Unlimited free chat, if you do not need a dedicated girlfriend app. Janitor AI is a community character platform rather than a companion app, but its help center says the free tier includes unlimited chats with community bots and that a free option will remain. Context on the free model is about 9,000 tokens, so long conversations lose early details. janitor+ costs $12.99 a month or $99 a year (checked October 24, 2026).
• GirlfriendGPT. Best for: Sampling a large character library before paying. The terms give the example of 2 or 3 characters and about 10 to 20 messages in total on a free account, plus credits earned through tasks. Paid plan prices appear only after sign-in, so they are not verified here. The terms describe subscriptions as generally non-refundable.
• Kindroid (https://kindroid.ai/). Best for: A free companion with long-term memory, upgraded later if needed. Kindroid has a free tier with a smaller number of Kindroid slots than paid plans; other free limits are not published. All prices appear only at checkout, by country and platform. Free users can be asked to verify their age through Yoti, while paid subscribers are treated as age-verified.
• Candy AI. Best for: A short preview of a paid companion service. The terms state a free user can generally send a maximum of 5 messages, so the free account works as a preview rather than a free companion. Paid plans start at $3.99 a month billed $47.88 a year, or $9.99 for the first month and then $13.99 a month (checked October 23, 2026). Candy AI does not allow photo uploads and bans images that resemble real people.

We read the pricing page, terms and help center of each companion service in our catalogue and asked one question first: does an official page say what a free account can do? Services that answer it with a number came first. Services that only say "free tier available" came later, and services whose official pages contradict each other on free use were left out.

Then we applied the rest of the criteria:

1. Size of the free allowance for one-to-one chat, as documented.
2. What stays locked on the free tier, such as media, extra characters or longer memory.
3. The paid price you would face after the free part runs out, quoted with its source and date.
4. Age checks that apply even to free accounts.
5. Deletion: whether you can remove the account and chats yourself.

Secrets AI uses an age gate with checks at registration and verification on request; deleting the account deletes chat history, while transaction records are kept 7 years. Janitor AI runs a one-time k-ID check in Australia, Brazil and the UK and offers self-serve deletion in Settings, Security. GirlfriendGPT relies on self-declaration and grants a right to erase without saying how long data is kept after closing. Kindroid may ask free users to verify with Yoti and deletes accounts on request. Candy AI uses a self-declared age gate, with further checks where local law requires, and deletes on request; otherwise data is kept about 3 years after last activity.

A daily cap. Secrets AI's wiki gives a number: 20 messages a day on the Free tier. The allowance comes back, so you can keep a slow conversation going without paying. You give up media and the larger allowances of paid tiers.

A one-time trial in messages. Candy AI's terms say a free user can generally send a maximum of 5 messages. GirlfriendGPT's terms give an example of about 10 to 20 messages in total, with extra credits you can earn through tasks. These are previews. They tell you whether you like the interface, not whether you would enjoy a long-running companion.

Janitor AI is the exception: its help center describes unlimited free chats with community bots. The trade-off is that it is a character platform, not a girlfriend app, and its free model has a context limit of about 9,000 tokens.

Searches for an AI girlfriend with unlimited messages mostly lead to paid plans. Secrets AI's Premium tier lists unlimited messages at $19.99/month. Candy AI's paid plans include unlimited text chat. Among the services on this page, only Janitor AI documents unlimited chat on a free tier.

We could not find official documentation for chatting without creating an account on any of these services, so "no sign up" use is not verified here.

A free account is still an account. Your chats are stored by the operator and covered by the same privacy policy as a paid user's. Candy AI's privacy notice says de-identified chats may be used to train its AI models. Secrets AI's policy lists "train and improve our AI models" among uses as well. GirlfriendGPT's terms grant it a broad, perpetual license to content you submit.

Age rules apply too. Kindroid can ask free users to verify their age through Yoti. Keep real names, addresses and photos of anyone out of chats, free or paid. More on this in our privacy guide.

When the free part runs out, the upgrade screen is where most billing surprises start.

• First-period discounts. Secrets AI's wiki says sale discounts apply to the first billing period only; plans then renew at the regular price.
• Promotional prices. Candy AI's $3.99 a month is a yearly plan billed $47.88 upfront, and its monthly plan renews at $13.99 after a $9.99 first month.
• Refund windows. Candy AI's terms allow a subscription refund only within 24 hours of payment and only if no more than 20 tokens were used. GirlfriendGPT's terms say paid subscriptions are not refunded except in limited cases.
• Separate currencies. Candy AI tokens and Secrets AI Moments are charged on top of, or as part of, a plan. Know which one a feature uses.
• Cancellation path. Candy AI and Secrets AI let you cancel in Settings; access runs to the end of the paid period.
