ChatGPT won't do adult chat. These 18+ services will.

ChatGPT still has no adult mode on October 23, 2026: OpenAI shelved the planned "erotica for verified adults" feature in March 2026, and its Model Spec still tells the model not to write erotica. If you want adult roleplay with fictional adult characters, use a service built for it. Secrets AI is the easiest place to start (20 free messages a day, prices published), Janitor AI is the best free option, and PepHop has the cheapest monthly plan at $4.99 a month.

All six services below are for adults 18+ and allow adult content under their own rules. None of them needs a jailbreak.

Short version: romance and mature themes in fiction, yes, within limits. Erotica, no. Here is what the official documents say, checked on October 23, 2026.

The Model Spec (version dated August 18, 2026) has a rule titled "Don't respond with erotica or gore". It says the assistant "should not generate erotica, depictions of illegal or non-consensual sexual activities, or extreme gore", except in scientific, historical, news, artistic or similar contexts. The same document says OpenAI is "exploring how to let developers and users generate erotica and gore in age-appropriate contexts through the API and ChatGPT", while "drawing a hard line" against sexual deepfakes and revenge porn. Exploring is not shipping.

The Usage Policies were updated on October 21, 2026, with changes effective November 20, 2026. They ban non-consensual intimate content, any sexualisation of people under 18 and "underaged sexual or violent roleplay", and they commit OpenAI to keeping sexual content away from minors. They don't add an adult content tier. Our direct request to openai.com was blocked, so we read this page from an Internet Archive copy made on October 22, 2026.

The "adult mode" story. In October 2025 Sam Altman said ChatGPT would allow erotica for verified adults, with a December 2025 target. It slipped to early 2026, and on March 26, 2026 the Financial Times reported the plan was paused indefinitely. OpenAI told the paper it would wait for "long-term research on the effects of sexually explicit chats and emotional attachments". We found no launch announcement after that date.

So if you're searching "nsfw chatgpt", there is no setting to switch on. Prompt tricks that try to get around the rules break OpenAI's terms and can cost you the account. We don't publish them.

Most people who leave ChatGPT for this aren't after anything extreme. They hit one of three walls:

• Refusals mid-story. A slow-burn romance turns intimate and the model steps out of the scene. Services on this list let you set the tone yourself under their rules.
• No character. ChatGPT is an assistant. Companion services give you a persistent persona with a name, a backstory and memory of earlier chats.
• No library. Janitor AI and Chub AI run on community-written characters, so you can start a story in one click instead of writing a setup prompt every time.

One thing doesn't change when you switch: the hard limits. Every service here bans minors and minor-coded characters, and we don't list services that don't. Most also ban sexual content depicting real people; Chub AI's terms are the weakest here, saying only that real photos are "frowned upon".

The criterion for this page is simple: a service has to allow adult chat between fictional adult characters by design, in its published rules, for users 18+.

What we checked, all on October 23, 2026, from a US connection:

1. Rules. Terms, content policies and age rules on each official site. Services that allow face swaps, real-person likeness or step themes were cut.
2. Price. Public USD pricing pages, help centers and official docs. Where a price shows only after sign-in, the table says "not published". We didn't estimate anything.
3. Free limit. Taken from the official FAQ or pricing page. Where none is published, we say so.
4. Which model answers you. This matters if you came from ChatGPT. Janitor AI (JLLM) and Chub AI (Mercury and Mars) name their own models. Candy AI's privacy notice says third-party LLM providers "may receive the content of your messages". Where a service doesn't say, we don't guess.

OurDream, SpicyChat and HammerAI are not included while we re-check their character catalogs (Oct 23, 2026).

We tried free sign-ups at Candy AI and Janitor AI. Each stopped at a CAPTCHA or a human check, which we didn't bypass. So we haven't chatted on any of the services here, and nothing here is a verdict on reply quality. Full process: methodology.

Secrets AI: closest to a long ChatGPT conversation

Secrets AI puts unusual weight on memory: lorebooks, recalled past conversations and longer context on higher tiers, according to its wiki. If what you liked about ChatGPT was a long thread that remembered details, this is the most direct swap among paid services.

• Free: 20 messages a day, no images or video.
• Price: Premium $19.99/month ($109.99/year, about $9.17/month) with unlimited messages. Ultimate at $39.99/month adds the strongest memory tier and group chats.
• Honest minus: the homepage advertises end-to-end encryption, but the privacy policy describes encryption at rest and in transit and lists training AI models among data uses.

Janitor AI: the free route

Janitor AI is a front end for community-written characters. Chats run free on its own model, JLLM, or on an outside model you connect. Characters with sexual or romantic themes must be tagged Limitless, and users in Australia, Brazil and the UK pass a one-time age check through k-ID.

• Free: unlimited chats on JLLM. The help center puts memory at roughly 8,000 to 9,000 tokens, after which older messages drop out.
• Price: standard-model chat is free. janitor+ costs $12.99/month or $99/year; renews automatically, tax not included. Checked October 24, 2026 on the official janitor+ page.
• Honest minus: connecting your own API key sends every message to that provider under its rules. If that provider is OpenAI, OpenAI's usage policies still apply to what you send.

Candy AI: if you want images and voice too

Candy AI is a browser app with characters you pick or build, plus images, short videos and voice messages. Adult content between fictional adult characters is part of the paid offer, and its policy bans deepfakes and images resembling real people.

• Free: 5 messages in total and one image. That's enough to see the interface, not to judge the writing.
• Price: $3.99/month on the 12-month plan, charged as $47.88 up front; $9.99 for the first month, then $13.99. Media uses tokens on top.
• Honest minus: refunds only within 24 hours and only if you've used 20 tokens or fewer.

PepHop: a cap you can see

PepHop is a web character chat where plans are sold by message count, which makes the bill easy to predict. Adult content is limited to registered users 18+. Its blocked-content policy is strict: no aged-up characters, no step themes, no bots based on real people, no explicit images.

• Free: some free messages for new users; the count isn't published.
• Price: Lite $4.99/month (2,000 messages), Classic $9.99 (5,000 messages, enhanced memory), Elite $29.99 (16,000).
• Honest minus: no voice or image features listed, and refunds are generally not offered.

Chub AI: for people who like to tinker

Chub AI is a hub for character cards, lorebooks and presets. Chats run on Chub's own models, Mercury and Mars, or on a provider you connect. Adult content sits behind account toggles, and the text policy bans any sexualisation of anyone who is or appears to be under 18.

• Free: browsing and chatting with a connected model; limits not published.
• Price: Mars is $20/month with unlimited messaging, per the official docs. The subscription page we opened accepted crypto only. Other tiers weren't shown without sign-in.
• Honest minus: most of the catalogue is user-written, and moderation relies on reports and basic filters. Expect to filter what you see.

Kindroid: one companion, built your way

Kindroid is an app (iOS, Android, web) where you build a companion called a Kin with a personality, backstory, voice and long-term memory. Its moderation guidelines permit adult content and erotic roleplay for adults. Paid subscribers count as age-verified; free users may be asked to verify through Yoti.

• Free: fewer Kin slots; a message limit isn't published.
• Price: shown only at checkout, by country and platform. The official page says web purchases are generally cheaper than app store purchases.
• Honest minus: deleting your account means contacting the company; there's no documented one-click option.

• SillyTavern is a free client, not a service: you bring your own model or API. It's for people comfortable with setup.
• Venice AI is closer to a general assistant than a companion app. We cover it separately.

• OpenAI branding on a third-party site. A "GPT" in the name doesn't tell you which model answers you or who reads your chats. Look for a privacy policy that names its model providers.
• Photo uploads of real people. Any service that turns uploaded photos of real people into sexual content is out. Check the content policy for an explicit ban on real-person likeness before you sign up.
• No age rule in the terms. A real adult service states 18+ in its terms and bans minor-coded characters. If you can't find that, leave.
• Jailbreak tools sold for ChatGPT. They break OpenAI's terms, they get accounts closed, and they often ask for your login.
• Prices you only see at checkout. That alone isn't a dealbreaker (Kindroid does it), but read the renewal price before you pay. Our billing guide covers discreet charges and cancelling.

If you want a writing assistant that takes on mature themes in fiction now and then, ChatGPT may already be enough within its rules. If you share an account or a device, a companion app with your chat history is a privacy risk on its own. Are these services private?

Some more than others. Chub's terms say private chats aren't used for training. Candy AI and Secrets AI list model training among data uses. Don't put your real name, address or photos into any chat.

Can I get banned from ChatGPT for trying to make it write NSFW?

Yes. Using prompts to get around OpenAI's rules breaks its terms, and OpenAI can restrict or close the account. A service built for adult fiction doesn't put your ChatGPT account at risk.
